Q: my father is havinga tough time with dementia, he is 77 years old. can anyone suggest a pracitce or technique to help him keep his mind sharp? thank you Ken
A: The most important thing is to continue to use the brain. Learning something new is an excellent way to do that. It doesn't have to be complicated. One I heard of is starting to brush your teeth with your left hand (assuming you're right handed). Doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing cards - all things that require an active mind - are a good idea. Sitting and watching TV - not so good. You know your father, so you should be able to come up with the kind of activity that he might find entertaining that also activates the brain. All the best to you.
