In a nutshell - What is the definition of the word feminism?

Q: Why is it that people label the mistreatment of males as "feminist" rather than what it is - "sexist"? Is it possible that - for some - the self brand "anti-feminist" might actually be better labelled as "anti-reverse-sexist" or even, "anti-sexist"? (I ask because a lot of the justification I read for anti-feminism is based on perceived mistreatment of males....) Is it possible that the only TRUE anti-feminist (by definition) would be one who disagrees with equality of females and males? Is it possible that people who 'target' or criticize those who label themselves feminists might be barking up the wrong tree? (i.e. - who says feminists are sexist? If anything, a great number of feminists are so atuned to the ideal of equality that they want no part of any bigoted thinking) Is there such a thing as feminist discrimination - due to polluting or bastardization of what feminism actually is? Mrs. - I like your answer - but - as for the definition being innately sexist, isn't it understood (buy default) that the definition "equal rights for women" is identical to "same rights for women as men"? (it's not equal rights to a donkey...well, I hope not). GunFanatic, based on your statement: "Feminists seek special rights and privileges for women at men's expense. They also pushes for sexist laws and acts that clearly discriminate against men". I'd like to say that I do NOT identify with these types of so-called "feminists". These very pursuits pervert what feminism is in the worst way possible - by taking a concept meant to create equality and bringing it to extremes that actually create inequality. To me - these aren't feminists. These are sexists using feminism as a tool to further their agendas. And, they help create discriminitation toward people like myself. Mrs - I recant. You are correct, by strict definition. Unfortunately, I don't think many feminists actually proscribe to the idea that men should not enjoy the same rights that they have. Perhaps a better term would be something like "Equalist".... Gary Walker, I'm not quite sure....I wear a business suit everyday, and my partner (a man) is a way better cook then I am....it's actually not so bad...

A: to me everyone who supports and works toward equal rights for women (equal to men's rights) is a feminist> The areas of equality include work, schooling, sports, hobbies, renting a place to live, and being able to walk anywhere alone at anytime without having to worry about being raped or assaulted. I don't share the extremist views of a few women who are sexist and think that men don't deserve equal rights. I like what you write about such people being sexists and using 'feminism' as a tool to hurt men instead of using it to help women get equal pay and equal rights to jobs, promotions etc.
