A: Approximately one in 17,000 people have albinism of one type or another (that is 0.00588 percent). Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is the most rare and is caused by a congenital absence (or gross reduction) of melanin pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. This condition is very rare and few statistics have been gathered about it.
